This region conformed originally around the pre-Hispanic city of El Tajín and subsequently, in the colonial period and even at the present time, around the city of Papantla.  

Although it covers an extensive zone, in which the Totonaca culture was developed, at the present comprehends from the “Cazones River” at the North, to the cities of Gutiérrez Zamora and Tecolutla at the South.  Some other localities of Veracruz that are part of this region of the Totonacapan, among many others are, Cazones, Coatzintla and Poza Rica
